About Us

WHO WE ARE

Garland Mill is an integrated Design + Build firm serving communities in northern New Hampshire and Vermont. We create livable and enduring structures that contribute to the well-being of our clients and community.

In 2025, we celebrate 40 years of design and construction excellence. Forty years of great buildings. Buildings that are healthy, resilient, and renewably-powered. Buildings that are comfortable, beautiful, and carefully-crafted. Buildings that are livable and accessible for people of all ages and physical abilities. We carry on this tradition in our design and build practice, guided by our long-standing commitment to sustainability, craftsmanship, and community.

As we look to the next 40 years, we continue to push the envelope in our work, looking beyond the well-trodden terrain of high-performance home building. The challenge we face today is how to build clean, low-energy homes—for everyone. Addressing housing affordability and access, continuing to deliver and refine low-carbon, high-efficiency processes and products, diversifying our workforce, ensuring thriving wages and a caring work environment—This work is the next horizon for Garland Mill as it continues to grow in its commitments.

For you history buffs out there: Garland Mill is named for a historic water-powered sawmill built in 1856 at the base of Mt. Cabot in Lancaster, New Hampshire. As the site of our company’s founding and current headquarters, the Garland Mill is an integral part of our history and evolution as a construction business. The careful observer can see the shape of the mill in our logo. While no longer central to the day-to-day of our business, the sawmill, is an enduring symbol of the values we hold and connection to the people and community we serve and support.

mission + values

We design and build healthy, resilient, and welcoming homes and buildings that endure over time. We love craft and architecture and pay close attention to every detail. Through our work and service, we contribute to a thriving community and healthy environment.

Respect

We treat our team members, trade partners, and clients with dignity. We foster a culture of inclusivity within our team and work environment. This culture of respect results in good jobs, good relationships, good designs and good buildings.

Honesty + Simplicity

Our work and how we accomplish it, is characterized by a straightforward, simple and durable approach to human interaction, building design and construction technique. Materials are what they appear to be: wood, stone, plaster, paint. Our processes, budgets and schedules are easy to read and transparent.

Craftsmanship

We value craft and quality architecture and are committed to pursuing knowledge in order to maintain the highest caliber of design and construction expertise.

Stewardship

We strive to be stewards of the built and natural environments—and to contribute positively to our climate and community.

Fun + Fulfillment

We aim to find joy and fulfillment in our work and to create meaningful, well-paid jobs for ourselves and our community. Work life balance is important to us.
