About Us
WHO WE ARE
Garland Mill is an integrated Design + Build firm serving communities in northern New Hampshire and Vermont. We create livable and enduring structures that contribute to the well-being of our clients and community.
In 2025, we celebrate 40 years of design and construction excellence. Forty years of great buildings. Buildings that are healthy, resilient, and renewably-powered. Buildings that are comfortable, beautiful, and carefully-crafted. Buildings that are livable and accessible for people of all ages and physical abilities. We carry on this tradition in our design and build practice, guided by our long-standing commitment to sustainability, craftsmanship, and community.
As we look to the next 40 years, we continue to push the envelope in our work, looking beyond the well-trodden terrain of high-performance home building. The challenge we face today is how to build clean, low-energy homes—for everyone. Addressing housing affordability and access, continuing to deliver and refine low-carbon, high-efficiency processes and products, diversifying our workforce, ensuring thriving wages and a caring work environment—This work is the next horizon for Garland Mill as it continues to grow in its commitments.
For you history buffs out there: Garland Mill is named for a historic water-powered sawmill built in 1856 at the base of Mt. Cabot in Lancaster, New Hampshire. As the site of our company’s founding and current headquarters, the Garland Mill is an integral part of our history and evolution as a construction business. The careful observer can see the shape of the mill in our logo. While no longer central to the day-to-day of our business, the sawmill, is an enduring symbol of the values we hold and connection to the people and community we serve and support.

worker ownership
Garland Mill is proud to be a worker-owned cooperative. That means the same people who design and build your home are the ones who own the company—equally and together.
We made this change to ensure long-term local ownership, deepen our shared commitment, and build a company that will last for generations. As a cooperative, we govern ourselves democratically, share in both the responsibilities and rewards, and make decisions with our community and mission in mind.
We believe that how a company is owned shapes how it behaves. And we believe in fairness, sustainability, craftsmanship, and place. That’s what we’re building together.
