Guildhall DER
residential i deep energy retrofit i renovation
A multi-generational family asked us to renovate an old Vermont farmhouse for a young couple with a toddler and a couple who had spent their careers as chemistry professors. The house had stood for a couple of centuries already and we combined a fair bit of structural repair with improved insulation and new cladding. Not negotiable were the original sash windows: those were removed and lovingly restored by a local artisan. Chickens, sheep, an old water wheel, a barn and some charismatic dogs rounded out the equation.
Inside, the family wanted a new living room for all three generations to connect in. In addition we renovated a separate but attached living space for the young family. New hard-working elements include new shared kitchen, all electric heating and cooling, domestic hot water, an ample mudroom/dog and vegetable washing station and a convenient firewood storage porch.
