Civic Project: Lancaster Warming Hut
Last July the Garland Mill donated a timberframe to the town of Lancaster for their new skating rink warming hut. The Mill and other community volunteers worked hard through the fall to enclose the building in time for the winter skating season. The rink warming hut features a bathroom, mechanical room with hose reel for flooding the rink and a large heated changing room. The warming hut increased the number of folks out skating this winter by a considerable amount. Parents particularly enjoyed the warm changing room and the bathroom facilities.
The project was accomplished with donated timber and ship-lapped lumber sawn at the Garland Mill. The hut was designed to use very little fuel to heat by installing 4 inches of rigid foam insulation under the slab, 6 inches of foam in the walls and 9 inches of foam on the roof. All the rigid foam was salvage.
The warming hut project was led by Lancaster Police Chief John Gardiner, Wes Arita, and Peter Riviere and benefited from generous donations of time and materials by Kilkenny Hardware, Perras Ace Hardware, White Mountain Lumber, AB Logging, Robby Couture, Bob MacInvaile, Bruno MacKenzie, and countless others.
